As you all can see each member of the site gets their own personal blog for them to post stories and for readers to leave comments. At the moment the available functionality is pretty basic. I intend to add more features/functions at some point, but with just releasing the new site there are a lot of other higher priority things that need to get done.
I would like to hear what features, if any, people would like me to add to their personal blog to make it more like some of the advanced blogging systems I am sure you all have seen.
If you have any comments I would like to hear them.
[Update]
I edited the title of this post to make it more general to cover all feature requests. So if you have a feature you would like to see that is related to any part of the site I would like to hear it.
member list?
this isn't a blog feature request, but for the site in general. Is there any way to see how many people are currently on the site, and a list of all the members? It might be neat to be able to see who else is signed up as an acm member.
re: member list?
I just want to clarify what you are asking here...
if you are asking to see a block in one of the sidebars with member statistics like "number members online", "number of guests online", and "number of registered members."
yes, this can be done. I was actually considering this before, but I thought maybe I should wait until the new site is fully advertised and our existing members get their accounts activated. this way it doesn't look like temple acm is made up of 5 people ;) with this idea, two questions need to be asked:
this is very possible, in fact its already there i just have it turned off. at the time i still had a lot of stuff to do so i figured i would leave it turned off until i could collaborate on what fields should be included for each member and how to arrange them on the page.
this feature is turned on for the current officers, which is dynamically updated by role. but again i'm not happy with the layout and would like input on the fields and layout.
pictures?
can we embed pictures/videos in the blogs if we pick the full html option? i haven't tried it yet, i was just wondering, since it would be cool for people to be able to post their own pictures of events and such.
re: pictures?
the simple answer is yes it's possible.
right now- the images would have to be hosted on another server or manually copied to our server's 'files' folder which isn't possible without sftp access directly to the server. also, 'full html' is only an option for admins, but additional html tags could be manually added to the 'ok list' for normal users as well. using the 'full html' option you should be able to use the embed commands displayed on sites like youtube.
a side note, i believe if a user uploads their profile picture to their 'my account' page then a thumbnail of that picture will be displayed in the corner of each of their blog posts.
as for actually uploading images to be added to a blog post from the create blog content form, this can be done but it will need some coding. we will need to discuss what the boundaries/requirements are for this feature.
also, there is a site-wide image gallery that hasn't made it off the development server yet, when it's finalized the ability for members to have their own photo albums would be an easy addition. there are a few considerations that need to be met for this that I would like to discuss with you, Claudia, and the rest of the officers. the next time we meet please remind me of this.
