Tim's Blog - Google Android

Hello all, I'm sure you all have heard of the iPhone, or Windows Mobile, but have you taken a good look at Google's new Android platform? No, it's not for robots. It's a new platform meant for mobile phones. Why should you care? Soon, for at least Sprint and T-Mobile so far, cell phones will be introduced sporting this new platform. The phones will most likely have touch screens (though Android does not require it). They should include various Google apps (the web browser and Google Maps functionality should be able to make most drool), but it also supports the coding of custom apps. It's not like the iPhone's app store where you have to pay money then go through Apple's crappy approval process to get your app on any phones. You also won't need $1000 to buy Visual Studio in order to code for it. All you need is Eclipse, and the Android SDK! Android will run Java applications, so you should be able to code for the phone pretty easily. Here are a few links with some exciting information about Android: http://code.google.com/android/ - Android's official page. http://code.google.com/android/intro/hello-android.html - Walkthrough showing how the SDK works. http://gizmodo.com/5038586/an-in+depth-video-tour-of-android-09-an-almos... - Video of the GUI. It might be old, but you get the idea. A simulator's included with the SDK, so you can try it out for yourself. I'm pretty excited about this. My Windows Mobile phone kind of sucks, so I welcome another option. If I've missed anything or am wrong about something, please comment!
